My Name Is Khan's Box Office Gross Makes It A Worldwide Success

4 day worldwide collection almost USD 20 million

Fueled by three very high-profile releases, the box office saw a record double-holiday gross this past weekend at the box office, which is simply an amazing box office performance.

Another amazing performance, yet not nearly as widely reported, is My Name is Khan and what it's gross was at the box office in domestic and worldwide release.

First, to give you some background on the movie, My Name Is Khan is a Bollywood produced film that is directed by Karan Johar.

The movie reportedly had a budget of less than $10 million when converted from the INR currency that was used when making the film, to USD.

It was picked up for distribution by Fox SearchLight, not only domestically, but worldwide as well, which did of course, include India as well. It was reported that the deal was closed in August of 2009, in which Fox paid an estimated 1 Billion INR, or the equivalent of a little more than $20 million USD.

It was released just five days ago, on February 12th, 2010 to worldwide box office territories, including a very limited release in the United States.

During the record Valentine's / President's Day weekend at the box office, My Name is Khan was shown at 120 locations across North America, and its box office numbers turned out to be more than was ever expected.

During the four-day holiday weekend, My Name Is Khan grossed an estimated $2.264 million from 120 sites, for an exceptional per theater average of $18,875. This is an incredible showing for a movie at the box office, especially since "Khan" is a Bollywood produced film.

Its domestic gross was enough to rank 13th on the top grosses for the weekend, and it's of note to mention that it had the highest per theater average for the weekend, even beating Valentine's Day's $17,227 per theater average.

This is an incredible box office performance for the movie, especially since it is a Bollywood produced but Hollywood distributed movie. In fact, My Name Is Khan is not only doing incredible box office numbers in the United States, but overseas as well.

In United Kingdom, My Name Is Khan set a box office record for a Bollywood released film in that territory, collecting approximately £936,000, or the equivalent of more than $1.477 million USD.

Additionally, My Name Is Khan has a Worldwide box office total of 930,000,000 INR ,which is the equal to almost $20 million USD, all from just its first four days of release at the box office.

Fox Searchlight is without a doubt extremely happy with this box office performance since sometime today the movie will pass the amount that they paid for the rights to distribute the film. This is already a success story for Fox Searchlight, one of 20th Century Fox's distribution arms, and it should turn out to be quite profitable for the studio.
