Harleen Kaur is a Brazilian model - "Giselle Monteiro" in Love Aaj Kal

Harleen Kaur is a Brazilian model and her real name is "Giselle Monteiro"

The Punjabi kudi isn’t a Punjabi kudi at all. She’s a 19-year-old Brazilian model called Giselle Monteiro who couldn’t speak Hindi or dance to save her life, at one point in time.

Movies do come with surprises sometimes by the actor and the audience as well. Rishi Kapoor has acted as Veer Singh in Love Aaj Kal and he shares his own love story with Harleen Kaur played by Giselle Monteiro to Saif Ali Khan’s character. But in the film, as he narrates to Saif his love story, he imagines his younger self as Saif, so that’s how we see Saif playing the Sardar in the film.

But something is strange here as Kapoor gets married to Harleen Kaur’s character the aged, Harleen shown with him in the climax is none other than his own real wife Neetu Singh.

It is quite peculiar that one would assume when films are being made, main lead actors of the film do meet each other during the making.

However, this thing didn’t happen in Love Aaj Kal. Rishi Kapoor therefore finally had the opportunity to meet his on-screen lover at the film’s premiere in Delhi on July 30th night. On lookers say they both were extremely delighted on meeting each other and talked a while before going inside the cinema hall.
Love Aaj Kal’ actress unveiled

The identity of Harleen Kaur of ‘Love Aaj Kal’ (pictured above) has finally been revealed. The tall, slim and strikingly pretty actress has generated curiosity ever since the film’s promos went on air, but the makers managed to keep her under wraps, as was the plan.

“After the film releases you would know why it’s been done,” director Imtiaz Ali had said.

And now the reason has become known. Harleen has been played by a 19-year-old Brazilian model called Giselle Monteiro, who had approached Ali to audition for the role of Jo, Saif’s Swiss girlfriend in the film. On his wife’s suggestion Ali took her for Harleen’s part, especially since he had not been unable to cast for that role despite auditioning girls from all over India.

Imtiaz Ali says if audiences had known beforehand that a Brazilian is playing a Punjabi girl-next-door in his film, they may have been put off by the idea, so that’s why her identity was hidden all this while.

By the way, Giselle does not know how to speak Hindi. But in the film she has only two lines to speak, which were dubbed. However, it was not so simple when it came to dance. Apparently, a lot of hard work and frustration went into making her get the steps right for the sequence showing her dancing at a wedding, which turned out to be her own engagement ceremony.
